Dear Tree Lover:
Wood objects, whether made by a master furniture maker or a grandfather, hold special meaning for us. Many among us aspire to be woodworkers and those of us lucky enough to practice the art of fine woodworking treasure the source of our inspiration: trees. As our old growth forests dwindle and species of once prolific tropical woods become endangered, it is important for us to take note and do what we can to protect this precious natural resource.
While the impact of the work of one woodworker on forest depletion may be minimal, the combined impact of the wood products industry in the United States is significant. In response to this growing concern, the Woodworkers' Guild of Southern California along with TreePeople is planning an exhibition called Good Wood: Furniture and Objects From Sustainable Materials. The show will provide a forum for California woodworkers to exhibit work that is made with environmentally sound materials and designed to minimize the negative impact on the earth.
The goal of Good Wood is to educate the public about ecologically sound woodwork and encourage growth in the marketplace for furniture and objects produced with sustainable methods. The show will open in April 2005 at the Pasadena Museum of California Art and also at Urban Forest, the gallery of WGSC in San Pedro. In May the shows will be combined at TreePeople's beautiful new sustainably designed conference center in Beverly Hills and in June WGSC will bring the show to San Diego in conjunction with the annual conference of The Furniture Society, The Other Side: A Tradition of Alternatives.
The cost of hosting this exhibition is substantial. Your contribution toward our fundraising goal of $75,000 will help to make it happen. We appreciate any donation you can make and look forward to seeing you and publicly honoring your support at the show.
