In 2005 the Woodworkers Guild of Southern California (WGSC) hosted an exhibition titled Good Wood: Furniture and Objects from Sustainable Materials.
Good Wood was created to explore the use of salvaged, recycled and certified well-managed lumber as alternatives to conventional wood sources and address the issue of sustainability through design. As woodworkers, we are particularly concerned with the dwindling bio-diversity and shrinking size of the world's forests. Good Wood educated the public about fine ecologically sound woodwork and encouraged growth in the marketplace for sustainable furniture and objects.
The show opened at the Pasadena Museum of California Art in April. Renowned woodworker Sam Maloof chose and presented awards for design, craftsmanship and sustainability. In May the show moved to TreePeople's green conference center in Beverly Hills. A workshop titled Sustainability in Architecture and Furniture Design was held, including panel discussions and an urban lumber milling demonstration. The final venue for the show was Trios Gallery in Solana Beach. Members of the WGSC gave a presentation on Good Wood at the Furniture Society Conference in San Diego.
In the fall of 2007, Good Wood 2 will open at the
Pasadena Museum of California Art.
