The mission of the Woodworkers' Guild of Southern California is to promote excellence in woodworking amongst professionals and amateurs. It seeks to expose the general public to the art and craft of fine woodworking and to facilitate the exchange of information between wood artisans and the greater community.

CURVES
The Fourth "Excellence in Woodwork" Exhibition
Opens October 12, 2006 at M.J. Higgins Fine Art and Furnishings

Trace your fingers along the weathered grooves of a driftwood burl or the polished flourishes of an Art Nouveau armoire and you understand at once the distinctly curvaceous possibilities of woodwork. The Woodworkers' Guild of Southern California celebrates these possibilities in CURVES: The Fourth "Excellence in Woodwork" Exhibition, opening October 12, 2006 at M.J. Higgins Fine Art and Furnishings in the Gallery Row District of Historic Downtown Los Angeles. CURVES features the works of 25 of Southern California's premier professional studio furniture and custom woodworkers.

Cindy Vargas, Guild officer and its only professional female member, frequently creates works based on curves as the primary design element. "Curves have musicality, dance and rhythm qualities, that wood expresses well," she explains. No wonder, then, that her latest product line is custom crafted music stands and that her sculptural podium executed from a single length of padauk was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for Walt Disney Concert Hall. "Curves are dynamic and powerful, and they inevitably make woodwork more feminine - probably one reason why I use them, despite their technical challenges."

Woodworkers' Guild of Southern California, an invitational member association founded in 2000, provides professional development programs and public education about woodwork of sustainable design, superior craftsmanship and environmentally sound materials. The Guild has held exhibitions such as CURVES in venues that include the Pasadena Museum of California Art, TreePeople and Trios Gallery. Its acclaimed Good Wood 2005 exhibition traveled to four locations in Southern California and was featured prominently in the national, regional and arts media.

"Our underlying goals are to promote awareness of the quality of workmanship available in the greater Los Angeles area and to demonstrate that fine woodwork can be part of daily life, not simply pieces to be exhibited in galleries and museums apart from daily life," states Harold Greene, Guild president. "Our works are to be used, and to be used with appreciation for wood's unique qualities."
